We all know the story of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz but its two titular characters, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good had a long history when they were young witches attending Shiz University. Galinda was a beautiful blond haired witch who was popular in school while Elpahaba is a green skinned witch who didnt’ exactly had a great childhood after her step father refused to accept her. Both witches were assigned to the same dorm room and immediately, their personalities clashed. As disain grows between the two roommates, Galinda plays a practical joke on Elphaba during a party which in turn causes her great embarrassment. As students were laughing, Galinda had a change of heart and went to Elphaba to dance with her. The two became friends for a while but things take a turn when both Elphaba and Galinda clash several times more due to having the same love interest, having different opinions on the Wizard’s regime. What exactly transpired to cause these witches to be at different ends of the spectrum in the world of Oz? Find out by securing access to Wicked!
This trailblazing musical is definitely one of the most amazing successes to hit Broadway and beyond. The storyline is based on the Gronovel Wicked Witch of the West and the classic Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Award-winning playwright and screenwriter Winnie Holzmann adapted this story for the big stage while Tony Award-winnign composer Stephen Schwartz provided lyrics and music. The production premiered on Broadway in 2003 followed by a U.S. tour, a production in London’s West End, and a U.K. tour. The record breaking results, including being one of the highest grossing musicals, as well as exceeding over 1 Billion in gross ticket sales makes Wicked one of the most commercially successful musicals to ever hit Broadway.
With a massively talented creative team, there is no mystery why Wicked brought such phenomenal results. The production brought out all the stops including securing the most astounding creative talents Broadway has ever seen. The production is led by Tony Award winning director Joe Mantello and Tony Award-winning choreographer Wayne Cilento. Of course a recordbreaking musical includes some of the most gifted sound and visual artists including legendary set designer Eugene Lee, Tony Award-winning costume designer Susan Hilferty, multi awarded lighting designer Kenneth Posner, and Drama desk awarded sound designer Tony Meola.
With such a great pool of talent working together for this riveting showcase, Wicked secured numerous accolades, including three Tony Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards (including Outstanding Musical), and four Outer Critics Circle Awards. If you think that’s impressive, wait til you find out that the first North American touring production was just as astounding as its Broadway run. The touring production secured seven Carbonell Awards, a Helen Hayes Award, and three Touring Broadway Awards (including Best Musical). Moreover, the musical spawned numerous productions across the world, reaping all the prestigious awards.
“If every music had the brains, heart, and courage of Wicked, Broadway really would be a magical place” – Time Magazine
Besides stellar accolades, the musical also gained countless praises for professional theater critics. Despite being originally derived from a children’s book, the musical is adapted for adults and kids to enjoy. Time Out New York raved about the musical’s not so shallow themes, “The lavishly designed musical addresses complex themes, such as standards of beauty, individual morality and, believe it or not, opposing fascism.” The writer went on to add that its robust score makes the musical soar. The Guardian added, “Wicked works because it was built to work.” The reviewer also recommended to readers and theater lovers on how to approach the reworked musical for its revival run, “Don’t fight it. Sit back, relax and trust the process. It still defies gravity.”
Wicked has starred some of Broadway’s most sensational legends, such as Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth for its original Broadway run. Its subsequent productions were just as brilliant with producers bringing in the most remarkable talents in the theater circuit. On this highly awaited North American 2024 tour, Wicked has secured a mighty talented ensemble cast – Lauren Samuels as Elphaba, Austen Danielle Bohmer as Glinda, Aymee Garcia as Madame Morrible, and Black Hammond as The Wizard.
