The Lion King follows the fate of the young lion cub Simba, who before his time has no choice but to come to terms with his fate of becoming the leader of the Pride Lands due to the tragedy that befalls his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a well-loved King by the people of his lands, faces immense jealousy from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which leaves Simba without a father. This forces the young prince into into hiding for years on end, and this is where Simba's personal change and his sudden homecoming to The Pride Lands and his destined rule as King.
Inspired by the previous 1994 film of the same title produced by Disney, The Lion King musical was accurately translated to the theater platform by director Julie Taymor and the astounding cast and crew. Its launch in 1997 was a testament to its success, being lauded by fans at the time. Greg Evans of Variety encapsulates The Lion King with unequivocal opinions in his posting, sharing that “Julie Taymor's approach of this Broadway mainstay is a wonder, a theatrical achievement unequaled in its beauty, brains and ingenuity. As courageous and daring as Simba himself, the stage version greatly upgrades nearly every aspect of the previous 90s animated movie, from visual artistry and narrative to Lebo M's writing and the freshly African-inspired pop numbers of Elton John and Tim Rice."
The ongoing musical was also met with the best reviews from fans. One in particular points to how this successful musical can appropriately be called “The best Broadway has to offer”, sharing how he felt that “the show was fantastic. It was passionately put together and the song and dance acts were phenomenal. The African savanna setting really brought the characters to life.” Most theatergoers who have attended the shows over the previous 20 years can attest that despite being a second retelling of a film, the iconic musical was a worthwhile show to watch.
The upcoming December’s season of The Lion King will be performing in Paramount Theatre at Washington on Wednesday 24th December 2025. Paramount Theatre, being similarly inspiring and jaw-dropping as the Broadway play with its naturally decorated interior and exterior architecture is considered by theatergoers as the only choice to host this famous show.
