The tale of The Lion King starts in a fictional region of the African savanna; based in The Pride Lands, the teenage heir Simba is destined to succeed as King, before betrayal occurs because of the actions of his evil uncle Scar and his intention to take the throne and become the ruling monarch himself. The first part's course of incidents leads to Simba's escape from The Pride Lands and the account of his ultimate return to retake his throne and his place as King.
The 1997 Broadway play, since its creation, had to borrow several design elements and inspiration from real African civilization and history given its setting. The plot itself is actually based on previously existing African leaders and actual happenings – Simba being the animal equivalent of Sundiata Mansa, the founder of the Malian Empire who was aptly named The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first woman in Broadway history to earn a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, made sure to be respectful of East Asian and African cultural sources, specifically with costume design, which paved the way for a precise staging of the show. The costumes alone are gracious portrayals of a few indigenous tribes in Africa, an exemplification of such is Simba’s outfit in the play which is actually copied from Kenyan Maasi warriors' armor. Just like the original 1994 movie, the iconic musical score penned by Elton John and Tim Rice pays homage to its African roots, with the live adaptation even including compositions with lyrics that are sung either in part or completely in African dialects like Swahili and Zulu. Also, the African motif is also noticeable in choreography, with many of the numbers showing off the grace of Bali-inspired movements.
The regalia, African influence, and lifelike stage design all merge effortlessly to make up an awe-inspiring musical. On Saturday 6th December 2025 and at Seattle, The Lion King from Broadway is hosted in Paramount Theatre - famous to local fans and visitors for holding the best musicals and plays owed to the leading amenities and topnotch sound system that entertainment venues can muster.
