The tale of The Lion King begins in a fictional region of the African savanna; living in The Pride Lands, the teenage lion Simba leads a free and easy life, before disloyalty is revealed because of the work of his dishonorable uncle Scar and his intention to rule the Pride Lands and become the ruling monarch himself. The first act's series of occurrences leads to the young prince's banishment from The Pride Lands and the account of his consequent return to retake his throne and his place as King.

The 1997 Broadway play, since its formation, had to develop extensive research on real African society and historical texts given its setting. The plot itself is actually based on previously existing African warriors and actual happenings – Simba as an example is the animal equivalent of Sundiata Mansa, the founder of the Malian Empire who was aptly referred to The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first woman in the history of Broadway to win a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, made sure to be respectful of East Asian and African cultural sources, especially outfits used, which resulted in a precise live adaptation of The Lion King. The costumes in particular are respectful depictions of some indigenous groups in Africa, an example of which is Simba’s garb in the musical which as it happens copied from Kenyan Maasi soldiers' attire. Just like the late 1994 movie, the iconic musical compositions created by Elton John and Tim Rice stays true to its African inspiration, with the live adaptation even adding songs with lyrics that are sung either in part or entirely in African languages including Swahili and Zulu. Also, the African motif is also clearly seen in choreography, with many of the numbers presenting the fluidity of Bali-inspired movements.

The 3D puppetry, music, and stellar performances all merge effortlessly to carry out an impressive musical. On Thursday 4th December 2025 and at Seattle, The Lion King from Broadway will be in Paramount Theatre - famous to local fans and visitors for hosting the best musicals and stage adaptations owed to the top facilities and topnotch lighting design that show venues can offer.
