Seattle’s Paramount Theatre invites you to an intimate look into a rock band’s chaotic studio session in the 1976. On October 12th, the theatre will be stepping back in time and into the hilarious rock and roll drama caused by the band members.
Stereophonic is a stage play with music written by American playwright David Adjmi, directed by Daniel Aukin, and music written and composed by Will Butler from the indie rock band Arcade Fire.
Stereophonic’s narrative follows a totally fictional British-American rock band that everyone’s been listening to and said to be on the rise towards great success to become one of the greatest stars of all time. The story takes place in 1976 to 1977, when the band is supposedly recording their best album yet. The superstar band members are drummer Simon, bassist Reg and keyboardist and vocalist Holly who are a married couple, and lovers guitarist and vocalist Peter and his long-term girlfriend vocalist and tambourinist Diana. Of course, every studio needs sound engineers and helping the band are Grover and Charlie, the sound guys. Recording a new album proves to be anything but easy for our musicians as drama unfolds at the recording studio in Sausalito, California. They are constantly sidetracked by personal struggles and out of tune group dynamics, leaving the spectators wondering if they make it, or maybe even wish for it all to end.
Stereophonic has been nominated 13 times for Tony Awards, making it the play that holds the most nominees. The play has won five Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Direction of a Play, Best Sound Design of a Play, Best Scenic Design of a Play, and Best Featured Actor in a Play won by Will Brill.
The play captures many spectators from a wide variety of interests. Fans of comedy, listeners of music, lovers of all things 70s, those who are into juicy drama shows, and those who enjoy a documentary style of entertainment, there’s nothing that this play cannot deliver for this mix of audience. The play also taps into an innovative narrative and stage set which makes it memorable in comparison to the shows that follow standard show routines. The stage allows the audience to not only peek in but also be part of the studio sessions.
