Paramount Theatre Seattle, Seattle, is getting ready for a front row look into a 1976’s studio session. On October 10th, the crowd will be stepping into the hilarious drama of a British-American band and its struggle to record their album.
Stereophonic is a stage play with music written by American playwright David Adjmi and directed by Daniel Aukin. The dramatic play’s key component, music, is written and composed by Will Butler from the indie rock band Arcade Fire.
The plot for Stereophonic follows a fictional Rock band that’s been all rage and on the rise towards extreme success, set from 1976 to 1977. The fictional stars are drummer Simon, married couple bassist Reg and keyboardist/vocalist Holly, and longtime partners guitarist/vocalist Peter and vocalist/tambourinist Diana. Accompanying the band are two sound engineers, Grover and Charlie. The band, however, seems to struggle throughout recording their new album at a recording studio in Sausalito, California. Their mission is overshadowed by the band members’s personal struggles and group dynamics which leaves the audience wondering if they break through, or worse, breakup.
The play currently holds the record for most Tony Award nominations at 13 nominations. At the Tony Awards’ 77th ceremony, Stereophonic won five awards for Best Play, Best Direction of a Play, Best Sound Design of a Play, Best Scenic Design of a Play, and Best Featured Actor in a Play won by Will Brill.
This play is not only perfect for music fans, but also for those who enjoy a documentary-like drama, funny anecdotes, unusual stage set, and those who want to watch something unique in how the characters are placed, and how the story unfolds. Stereophonic is a suspenseful and dramatic play that’s not to be missed.
