"Six — The Musical" was born as a production by the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society in 2017 in the UK. The positive reviews of those showings led to a professional production that crisscrossed the U.K. in 2018.
"Six — The Musical" made its official opening on London’s West End in 2019. It had a well-received run until the pandemic disrupted performances for most of 2020.
But still, the musical continued to grow in popularity and was went on a series of tours across the world. It eventually moved to New York City, where it was the first new play to begin performing on Broadway after the COVID pandemic.
It continues to tour across the country and the world today. An interesting twist to the production of "Six" was that Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss used actual pop stars to model the characters. They used inspiration from celebrities like Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Adele, Celine Dion, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, and Alicia Keys for the character development.

"Six" is the tale of the lives of the wives of King Henry VIII, who was an infamous king of England in the 1500s. During his 4 decades of rule, he married six times. His demands to leave his first marriage saw the separation of the Church of England. Many people probably are familiar with the story of Henry VIII. However, you be as familiar with the story of his many wives.
The musical delves into the story of these six queens as they recount their individual experiences with Henry VIII. The queens try to decide who had the worst experience in living with the king. The queens discuss divorce, rejections, infidelity, and even beheadings in a way that makes you laugh while also touching your soul. There is a relatable twist on the story by incorporating a dating app in a hilarious way.
Together they realize that arguing over who had the worst experience with Henry VIII is pointless. They come to realize that Henry VIII denied their individuality. They’re not just the six wives of a terrible king - they have their individual strengths that deserve celebrating. The Six eventually help each other to write new endings to their stories. They achieve their “happily ever afters” that Henry VIII denied them by imagining what their lives would’ve been like without marrying Henry VIII.
