He’s back, braver and stronger than ever. SHAWN MENDES is marking his return to the live stage. Four years after “Wonder”, the Canadian singer-songwriter is back with a deeply-personal record that feels “like such a gift”. Releasing “Shawn” this October, the man’s birthday singles “Why Why Why” and “Isn't That Enough” offer a glimpse into his new era. Witness it come to life as he heads up the stage, performing every single song from the album at his “For Friends and Family Only” series of shows.
His intimate run of performances mark the start of the man’s new era, taking fans on a reflective journey of finding himself over the last few years. “I wanted the first shows back to be special and to play this album for you live in the places we recorded it,” Mendes shared. “I’ve never played an album top to bottom before but it’s already one of my favourite shows I’ve ever rehearsed. I love you guys, the band and I can’t wait to see you!”
Written by Mendes and co-produced alongside Scott Harris, Mike Sabath, Nate Mercereau, and Eddie Benjamin, with songwriting credits Amy Allen and Ethan Gruska, the Grammy-nominated artist shares how much of a healing journey it’s been to find the strength to make it back to the studio.
“Music really can be medicine. 2 years ago I felt like I had absolutely no idea who I was. A year ago I couldn’t step into a studio without falling into complete panic. So to be here right now with 12 beautiful finished songs feels like such a gift,” he shared in a heartfelt letter about his new album.
Dedicated to his friends and family, it’s an album that brought the singer’s back life into his hands. Despite life’s brutal challenges, he credits people close to his heart for making it through with him.
In a series of Instagram posts, Mendes shared some beautiful places where songs were recorded, and a brief story about his new tracks. At Bear Creek Studio in Washington, he says “i feel like this was when we really started to tap into the essence of the album and everything and it just started to flow…laughs, tears, truths, songs, whisky.”
“Handwritten”, “Illuminate”, “Shawn Mendes”, “Wonder”, and finally back to “Shawn”, it’s gonna be a beautiful journey as the artist finds his way back to the stage. After a stepback from the limelight, he’s got loads of stories and realizations to share. Witness it LIVE at the tour — specially made “For Friends and Family Only”, and that includes you!
