The Ukrainian ballet troupe Grand Kyiv Ballet is leaping into Seattle for a four-day event that features their version of “Snow White” in dance form!
Oleksandr Stoianov, the principal dancer of Ukraine's National Opera, founded the Grand Kyiv Ballet a decage ago. Internationally, he is referred to as the “Modern Nureyev” and is noted for his high jumps and vigor. Currently, he works as the artistic director, producer, and lead dancer of the ballet company alongside Prima Ballerina Kateryna Kukhar.
In a recent interview, the ballet company promised to use their artistic talent as a “weapon”, in response to the brutal war plaguing the dancers’ country. “Grand Kyiv Ballet’s weapon is dance, which helps show not only the high art of the country, but the brutal war in Ukraine,” Stoianov shares. “Everyone does their best to help the Motherland being on [their] own frontline.”
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is a graceful ballet adaptation of the Grimm Brothers' fairy tale of the same name. This time around, it is set to musical themes by Polish composer Bogdan Pavlovsky while adopting the cartoonish atmosphere of the Disney animated film.
Those familiar with the tale will be delighted to know that the core elements are retained in this version - magical creatures, good humor, colorful costumes, and a lovely plot - making it a must-see performance for both young and adult spectators.
