Story

The Mamma Mia! story takes place on a fictional Greek island, where Sophie will soon be married to her fiance, Sky, and wants her father to walk her down the aisle. She and her mother, Donna, a former rockstar of a local band, don’t know who Sophie’s father is, and Donna doesn’t divulge much information. Sophie looks for details and discovers three possible contenders whom she invites to the island without telling Donna.

Donna is taken by surprise to see her three former partners in the same place as fresh sparks fly between her and Sam. In the process of Sophie figuring out who is her father, she begins rethinking her upcoming wedding, wondering if marrying Sky is the right choice at 20 years old.

Facts

Catherine Johnson created this Mamma Mia Broadway classic jukebox musical to immortalize ABBA’s discography in a tale about love. The iconic Swedish pop band ran from 1972 to 1982 and stayed popular well into the 90s in their own right, but the release of Mamma Mia! has kept these artists at the forefront of our minds even into the new millennium. At least 65 million people in different countries have attended a Mamma Mia! show, not counting the hit movie featuring big names in Hollywood. The Broadway production was the ninth-longest show ever, and since it has been produced in 60 countries over the last 2 decades, it’s sure to have broken more records along the way.
