Stephen Schartz’s genius and gift breach generation gaps, from beloved Disney films to pure Broadway enchantment charm. The hit-making virtuoso who brought Godspell and Pippin to the world has now breathed life into Broadway-blockbuster Wicked, which comes to Paramount Theatre for the fall playbill.
Wicked cleverly weaves governmental subjects, distinctive heroes, and unlikely romance within a number of catchy tracks, including Defying Gravity, which has taken Broadway by storm.
The tale follows Elphaba, the adulterine daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her family and identity struggles, Elphaba makes it into the respected Shiz University, where she rooms with social butterfly Galinda. Two complete opposites hardly get along at first but soon befriend.
Unfortunately, things go downhill when Elphaba notices heinous acts against the Animals, a sentient race often targeted by persecution. Galinda and Elphaba seek the Wizard for help, but the Wizard unfortunately offers little assistance. A unsatisfied Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for the Animals, leaving Galinda and her studies at Shiz University behind.
Meanwhile, Galinda climbs the social ladder, marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an aristocratic lifestyle. Elphaba accidently wins Fiyero’s admiration as he falls in love with her. Will the couple’s love blossom unburdened, or will Elphaba’s agenda push Fiyero away, distance her from friends, and destroy her?
Wicked kicked off its first debut 20 years ago at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its popularity spread, it broke into new theatres year after year, earning international acclaim across multiple countries and continents. Its capacity to draw audiences also inspired Hollywood producers to release a two-part motion picture based on the Broadway show, that released November 2024.
Wicked earned numerous awards during its heyday in the 2000s, including Two Drama Desk Awards, three Tony awards, and a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater Album. The cast and crew performing at Paramount Theatre on Thursday 21st November 2024 promise to deliver a fantastic performance.
