“Without knowing any better, one might easily mistake the new stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer-winning 1960 novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” for a revival of a classic Golden Age Broadway drama.” – BroadwayWorld.
“To Kill a Mockingbird has many teachable moments, perhaps a few too many. But it does a very decent job.” Timeout New York.
“Against all odds, writer Aaron Sorkin and director Bartlett Sher have succeeded in crafting a stage-worthy adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic American novel “To Kill a Mockingbird.” – Variety.
To Kill a Mockingbird portrays a society that modern America knows all too well. During the Great Depression, A black man named Tom Robinson was falsely accused of raping a young white woman in Maycomb, Alabama. In need of a defense attorney, Robinson was assigned a lawyer named Atticus Finch. Maycomb’s citizens disapprove of the assignment, but Finch accepts the job and vows to defend Robinson to the best of his ability. During the trial, Finch and his family have been the subject of taunting from Maycomb’s community members. Will Finch get Robinson acquitted? Or will Robinson get convicted of the heinous crime?
Harper Lee wrote the novel as fiction, but she was inspired by several actual events near her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. Moreover, several characters were inspired by real people in Lee’s life, including her father, who was an attorney like Finch. In 1919, Lee’s father was assigned to defend two black men accused of murder. To Kill a Mockingbird was a 1960 novel by Pulitzer-prize-winning author Harper Lee. The story was adapted for the stage in 2018 by Aaron Sorkin. The show, directed by Berlett Sher, opened on Broadway at the Shubert Theater in New York. The show amassed $1.5 million in ticket sales in its opening week and also gained numerous rave reviews.
Arifa Akbar from the Guardian complimented the play’s narrative, “Sorkin rejigs the narrative smoothly, weaving together the children’s world and the legal drama. The direction from Bartlett Sher is just as smooth, with some short scenes that yo-yo between the courtroom and the Finches’ porch but never feel brusque.” Meanwhile, the Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney mentioned that the play had a way of keeping its audiences hooked despite everyone already knowing the plot. “Perhaps the most notable achievement of this thoughtful adaptation, and Bartlett Sher’s meticulously calibrated Broadway production, is that it takes Harper Lee’s 1960 novel and makes us hang on every word as if experiencing the story for the first time.” Variety’s Marilyn Stasio added, “Against all odds, writer Aaron Sorkin and director Bartlett Sher have successfully crafted a stage-worthy adaptation of Lee’s classic American novel.”

Many viewers also acknowledged the play’s varying plot from the novel. In the stage adaptation, the storyline features Atticus Finch as the main protagonist instead of his daughter, Scout, in the novel. This 2022, the cast will be composed of equally distinguished performers, such as Emmy-award-winning actor Richard Thomas, Melanie Moore, Oscar nominee Mary Badham, and more.
