The award-winning competition-reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race has been airing since 2009. The show is now on its fourteenth season, with numerous spin-offs ( RuPaul's Drag Race All-Stars, RuPaul’s Drag U, RuPaul’s Drag Race Untucked, RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race) and franchises in the U.K. and Australia. First airing on Logo TV, the show became the network’s highest-rated reality television program. In 2017, the show was picked up by VH1.
Hosted by the legendary “Queen of Drag,” RuPaul Andre Charles, the show has won four consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program from 2016 to 2021. Meanwhile, RuPaul has won two consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Host for a Reality-Competition Program.
The show's format is relatively simple; the queens submit an audition video. Contestants will be selected RuPaul himself. Once the selected pool of queens is chosen, they compete against each other in several challenges. In each episode, one contestant is eliminated. The panel of judges includes RuPaul, Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and TV personality Ross Matthews.
Celebrity guest judges are often one of the highlights of the show. The most prominent celebrity judges include Neil Patrick Harris, Khloe Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, Marc Jacobs, Ariana Grande, and Miley Cyrus.
RuPaul’s Drag Race has become so big that the show started going on tour. The events featuring the queens began with the Rupaul's Drag Convention, a.k.a. Dragcon, held in Los Angeles every year. Later, an event management company collaborated with RuPaul to bring the show on tour across the U.S. and internationally.
